HEAD HOLDER POSITIONERS FOR CHAIRS

Head Holder Positioners for chairs are the connecting devices between the top plate, top bar, or audio post on your chair and the head holder on the primate subject’s head. This devise limits head movement and arranges the head in a repeatable position each time the subject is placed in the chair.

Head Holder Chair Positioners are available in the following four styles:

• Three-Part Head Holder Positioner (6-FHC-Sx) – use this option with chairs that have a top plate
• Universal Head Holder Positioner (6-FHB-Sx) – (two parts)use this option with chairs that have a top bar
• Universal Head Holder Positioner (6-FHB-S2-Audio)- (two parts) use this option with chairs that have an audio post
• Head Holder Positioner for MRI Chairs (6-FHD-J9) – use with the horizontal MRI Chair (1-CCM-CHAIR).
• SwivelHead Holder Positioner (6-FAC-XX-X) – swivel head for use with most style chairs, including those with top bars, top plates, or audio posts see chart.

This adjustable devise allows for a far greater range of positions than most other head holder positioners. It swivels fore and aft 180 °, as well as side-to-side rotation.

Three-Part Head Holder Positioner

The Three-Part Head Holder Positioner on the Chair (6-FHC-Sxx) is designed to provide absolute anterior/posterior (A/P) alignment with the centerline of the Chair.

The above Head Holder Positioner on the Chair (6-FHC-Sxx) model consists of three major parts:

• Threaded Top Shaft (6-FHC-S2P)
• Sleeve Coupling (6-FHC-S2C )
• Bottom Shafts (four options)
• 6-FHC-S2A (large) – for use with cylinder style head holders
• 6-FHC-S6A (medium) – for use with cylinder style head holders
• 6-FHC-S4A (small) – for use with cylinder style head holders
• 6-FHB-S2B – for use with post style head holders

The above three parts fit together and function as follows:

The sleeve coupling joins the bottom shaft to the threaded top shaft, providing repeatable positioning and firm alignment. The four bottom shaft options permit the use of the three-part head holder positioner with a variety of head holder types and sizes.

The Threaded Top Shaft (6-FHC-S2P) allows for vertical adjustment and eye level alignment. Fore and aft adjustment is provided by the slot in the top plate of your primate chair. Measurements for the eye to screen distance are measured from the front edge of the side head support on your chair. The front edge of the eye should approximate the plain of the front edge of the two side head supports. See the table below for part numbers.

The following models are designed for use on all chairs with side head supports and top plate or with a top bar. The head holder positioners allow for vertical adjustment. The design also incorporates a system that provides absolute rotational resistance. The 6-FHC-S2, 6-FHC-S4, 6-FHC-S6, and the 6-FHB-S2 models fit standard, small, and large sized chairs. 6-FHC-S5 fits Mini Chairs only.

Universal Head Holder Positioner

The Universal Head Holder Positioner on the chair (6-FHB-xx) is used on the chairs with a top bar (6-FHB-Sx) and chairs with an audio post (6-FHB-S2-Audio).

At time of order, please specify whether you will be using a top bar chair or an audio chair. The size and components of the Universal Head Holder Positioner will vary, depending on the type of chair that will be used in conjunction with the Universal Head holder Positioning System.

There are two top-bar primate chair models available, both of which are compatible with the Universal Head Holder Positioning System. The original model (6-FHB-S2) consists of a Hollander cross fitting, which slides onto the 1.06” (2.69cm) top bar (1-CCx-9B) and secured with set screws. This allows for rotation, but a limited amount of tilt, for and aft, of the head. The universal head holder positioner provides fairly accurate A/P alignment.

The newest model of Adjustable Head Holder Positioners ( 6-FAC-SA) replaces the Hollander cross fitting with a top bar positioning block, which is attached to the 1” (2.54cm) top bar of the primate chair. Both the universal head holder positioners and the swivel head holder positioner attach directly to the block (as pictured below). The advantage of the using the block, rather than the Hollander cross fitting, is that no screws are required to hold the block in place. The set screws of the Hollander cross fitting can cause indentations in the bar, making repositioning difficult.

Note: The top bar positioning block uses a 1” (2.54cm) diameter top bar, and the Hollander cross fitting uses a 1.06” (2.69cm) diameter top bar. Both the universal head holder positioner and the swivel head positioner may be used in conjunction with either the Hollander cross fitting or the top bar positioning block.

The Universal Head Holder Positioner (6-FHB-S2) includes the following:

• Hollander Cross Fitting or Top Bar Positioning Block
• Universal Top Shaft (a vertical rod, 6-FHB-S2A)

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

• The bottom shaft of this unit can be ordered to fit either the cylinder style head holder on the head or the head post (post style head holder) on the head.
• The horizontal top bar and the side head support plates are available in the primate chair section (section 1) of this catalog.
• To ensure that alignment is consistent from animal to animal, the head holders (both post and cylinder style) must be stereotaxically aligned in surgery.
• Universal Head Holder Positioners may also be designed for use with an audio post on a primate chair (6-FHB-S2-Audio). At the time of order, please specify whether you will be using a chair that comes with a top bar or audio post. When using the Universal Head Holder Positioning System in conjunction with an audio chair, neither a Hollander cross fitting nor a top bar positioning block are necessary. Furthermore, the size of the positioning system is tailored to the specific type of chair that will be used in the investigations.

MRI Head Holder Positioners

The MRI Head Holder Positioner for primate chairs (6-FHD-J9) is a two-part unit made entirely from CILUX. Unlike those made from stainless steel or brass, head holder positioners made from CILUX produces no shadow in MRI imaging. Our CILUX head holder positioners are recommended for MRI use with either conscious/awake or anaesthetized primates. This unit only attaches to the 6-FHP-J9 MRI Head Holder on head model.
