Head Holders on Head (6-FHP)

Head Holders that are positioned on the primate subject’s head are designed for used with the Head Positioners on the primate chair. The Head Holders are available in two models: Cylinder Style and Post Style. Head Holders may be ordered in variety of materials and sizes to meet your research needs.

Cylinder Head Holders

The Cylinder Style Head Holders, cylindrical in shape are designed to securely attach to the skull with dental acrylic and bone screws. An optional transverse rod is included for particularly active primate subjects. For added security, this rod fits through two holes at the base of the Head Holder where it is attached to the acrylic. The upper end of the cylindrical Head Holder attaches to the Head Holder Positioner on the chair.

Because the Cylinder Style Head Holders has a broader base then the Post Style Head Holders, there may be better adhesion to the dental acrylic on the skull. This style is also shorter than the post style, thus less obtrusive.

The Cylinder Style Head Holder is available in the following materials:

• 316 Stainless Steel
• Titanium
• CILUX – recommended for MRI use
• PEEK – recommended for MRI use

(The use of titanium for MRI studies reduces, but does not eliminate the broad shadowing in the MRI field).

The Cylinder Style Head Holder is available in the following sizes:

• Small
• Medium
• Large

We highly recommend the use of our Stereotaxic Alignment Tools to facilitate fixing the Head Holders in the proper position.

PEEK Head Holders, Cylinder Style

Crist Instrument Co., Inc. is now offering a new MRI compatible product in addition to our CILUX made products. We have developed Head Holders made from PEEK. PEEK is a high temperature resistant engineered thermoplastic with excellent chemical and fatigue resistance and thermal stability.

Advantages of Peek:

• Very high continuous working temperature – mechanical properties are retained even at temperatures in excess of 250 ° C (482 ° F)
• Very high heat distortion temperature – HDT is 160 ° C (320 ° F)
• Exceptional chemical resistance – Peek is insoluble in all common solvents and is extremely resistant to attack by a very wide range of organic and inorganic chemicals
• Excellent hydrolysis resistance – Peek has an excellent resistance to hydrolysis in boiling water and superheated steam at temperatures in excess of 250 ° C (482 ° F).
• Good radiation resistance – Peek can absorb more than 100 M rads of irradiation with no significant reduction in mechanical properties and it exhibits exceptional resistance to high doses of gamma radiation.
• Outstanding wear and abrasion resistance – Peek has excellent wear and abrasion resistance characteristics with low coefficient of friction and high limiting PV properties

PLUGS (HP-01P, HP-04P and HP06P)

This device is a plastic plug that fits into the Head Holders on the Head to prevent dirt and other debris from getting inside the cylinder. Plugs are also available to fit the Head Holders used with MRI PRODUCTS. Call for price quotes.

The Head Post provides slightly a different method of positioning the primate subject’s head in the same orientation each time he/she is placed in the tasking center. One end of the post can be securely attached to the head with dental acrylic and bone screws, and the other end easily inserts into the head positioner on the chair. Unlike the cylinder style, the post style does not require the primate to be crouched into position when connecting the head holder on the head to the head positioner on the chair. The design of the head post allows the head post to simply be clamped into the concave cavity on the side of the head positioner.

Post style head holders are is available in 316 stainless steel and titanium.
